“You are going to love Cape Town,” they said. “You absolutely have to go up Table Mountain, and down Chapman’s Peak and across to Robben Island,” were their suggestions. “Clifton 4th beach is the best beach,” they said. “The wine country is amazing” and “The Waterfront is beautiful” and “The art galleries in Kalk Bay are a must.” All of these things are true; Cape Town has a long list of crowd favourites and once you’ve visited the Mother City, you will have yours too… Suggestions you will share with your friends, with a knowing nod and a puffed-out chest because now you too, know some of Cape Town’s secrets.

Here is another secret: There is a side to Cape Town that the locals know about but that isn’t always on a visitor’s radar. Cape Town has some of the world’s best spas. And not making use of them on your travels is a huge miss. Even if it is just for a deep-tissue massage on your first day to get your holiday-face on. (Although we suggest a full day of indulgence – you will thank us later.)

The great thing about the spa options in Cape Town is that there are places to suit every budget and virtually every taste. Want to feel like you’re in Bali, combined with five-star service? Done (We suggest the One&Only Spa; it has a wide variety of treatments and is housed on a small island in the Waterfront canals at the One&Only Hotel – and no, you don’t have to be a hotel guest.) Want a spa in the middle of a piece of South African history and breath-taking landscapes? Done (We suggest Babylonstoren. It is on a wine farm that also has one of the original Cape Gardens that was planted to feed the sailors of the 1600s and 1700s.)

How about a floatation tank all to yourself, with underground music? Life Day Spa at Crystal Towers Hotel has one of the best. Looking for a spa that specialises in men and male beauty? Glass House in the Silo district of the waterfront is your spot! And good, old-fashioned attention to detail from a veritable institution in Cape Town’s history? The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa is for you. If you are enjoying a day on the beach, try Langaro spa in Camps Bay.

There is another aspect to this secret too: Cape Town is a really great city if you’re looking to do deeper body work. It boasts some of the best dermatologists, skin specialists, health clinics and aesthetics doctors in the world. Botox, surgery, in-plants, reductions, peels, adjustments…

We call them “medical safaris” and NananTravel has experience in helping our clients with:
• Botox, Dysport and Xeomin treatments for face and body.
• Facelifts, both surgical and non-surgical.
• Hair, breast and any other implant.
• Breast, nose, ear and other adjustment surgery.
• Dental work.

Whatever you may be looking to do, it is possible in Cape Town. And NananTravel will gladly assist you in finding the best clinic or clinician for your needs and making sure that, upon your return home, when your friends say “You look so relaxed and refreshed after your holiday to Cape Town, you will know that it is true.”

Review: Life Day Spa at Crystal Towers Hotel

Life Day Spa consists of a network of top quality spas around the country. This spa is located in the Century City development of Cape Town, which makes it fairly central for most travellers, and a short Uber ride from the V&A Waterfront. You’ll find the spa facilities inside the Crystal Towers Hotel, up on the first floor.

We loved going to Life Day Spa, Century City. They have an extensive list of therapy options, a very attentive staff, great facilities, awesome views and good food and drink so that you can make a full day of indulging yourself.

Specifically:

  • Flotation Therapy consists of 30 or 60 minutes in their flotation tank so full of minerals, magnesium and salt straight from the Dead Sea, that one session is the equivalent of two to four hours of uninterrupted sleep to your body. (R350 and R500 per person)
  • The Rasul Chamber is a rain and steam room, based on the traditional Turkish bath. You’ll get medicinal earth mud to cleanse and detoxify your skin. We strongly suggest taking your partner with for this. (30 minutes = R380 per person; 60 minutes = R510 per person)
  • Any one of their massage options are magically relaxing. Whether it is Hot Stone, Swedish, Aromatherapy, Sports, Soy Candle or Pregnancy. (From R410 for 30 minutes to R680 for 60 minutes)

Life Day Spa also has great package deals: Romantic, Pregnant, Group, Full Day, etc. Have a look at their brochure online and make a booking through us or directly.

TIPS: Like many well-equipped spas, the Life Day Spa in Century City has really great amenities and these are available to you before and after your actual treatments, so budget time to spend making use of these.

Also, like most good spas, you are required to fill out a form prior to your treatments, which ask you a number of medical and skin-related questions. The answers to this obviously help the beauticians prioritise concern areas. However, your answers may also be used to try to sell you products after your treatments. We usually write a very polite “Please don’t pitch any products to me after my treatment” at the end of our forms, so that our Zen isn’t spoilt by trying to politely decline their products. Obviously is you do want to buy great skin care products, please support this great spa.

Cape Town is known for many things: Table Mountain, Robben Island, beautiful beaches, tasty wine country and more.

Until now, however, it couldn’t brag of a cultural centre of international acclaim. Yes, there are valiant efforts from the Ikizo Museums and ArtScape Theatre complex—and we eagerly encourage you to visit these—but they haven’t consistently featured on any list of Top Things To Do In Cape Town that we’ve seen.

All of that changes with the arrival of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa. We couldn’t say this any louder or more proudly: The Zeitz MOCAA is an incredible addition to the art and cultural scene in Cape Town. The building’s architecture is breath-taking, its art is as impressive as it is ground-breaking, and the surrounding area feels like you’re wandering around any top-shelf international city in the world.

The MOCAA is housed in an historic grain silo of Cape Town’s harbour. Originally built in 1921 as the tallest in sub-Saharan Africa, the building comprises forty-two cylindrical grain-storage silos that once held up to 30,000 tons of wheat, maize, soya and sorghum. It was shuttered in 2001 and became a bit of an eye-sore as the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront modernised and expanded all around it.

Mat Cash of Heatherwick Studio in London, together with a tribe of co-conspirators, saw the potential in the building, carved out the central cavity with massive hydraulic breakers and wire saws, and gave the world is newest art institution.

(A little-known fact about the renovation: The concrete of the original silos wasn’t stable or thick enough for the carve-outs that the design envisioned. To have a successful excavation, a new layer of concrete had to be cast inside each cylinder. The silos were basically rebuilt, only to be sliced up again.)

The actual art isn’t hung inside these cylinders – that wouldn’t make for much viewing pleasure. Rather, four storeys of gallery “boxes” have been built inside a number of silos, out of view from the central atrium. You access each level via the amazing glass elevators or equally splendid staircases.

(Tip: if nobody’s around, take the elevator from the ground floor straight up to the 6th floor and down again – your inner child with thank you. Another tip: Don’t wear clunky heels on your visit to the MOCAA – the gallery floors are made of suspended grey resin and wood, and can creak quite a bit, interfering with your viewing zen.)

We found the actual art to be exciting too. The works are mainly—but not exclusively—from African-born and African-based artists and cover many media. The definitive feeling we left with, from both permanent and temporary exhibitions, is that Africa has found its own creative voice and is demanding a place in the global art-farm. We loved that. We especially loved:

Be sure to spend some time on the roof of the silos – assuming you’re not afraid of heights, because the glass floor is the ceiling of the atrium below.

Also make sure that you get to the basement level of the museum. It’s not that easy to find thanks to a lack of clear signage, but is worth the quest. Down there, galleries are housed in the raw roots of the silo building. It’s a real treat.

Outside the Zeitz MOCAA, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in the Docklands district of London. There’s a modern yet classic feeling to buildings and walk-ways. Many large corporates have made the newer silo buildings (numbered Silo1 to Silo5) their home, and there are hotels, galleries, coffee shops and restaurants aplenty.

We happily recommend:

  • GUILD, a gallery, studio and store that features well-curated works and often-rotated exhibitions. Until December 2017 it also has an exciting WallpaperSTORE pop-up.
  • The Yard, a relaxed eatery-cum-deli which has a scrumptious buffet table. Generally open for breakfast, lunch and dinner except when they have private functions.
  • The rooftop pool area and eatery at the RadissonRED – you don’t have to be a hotel resident to laze about the pool sipping cocktails and snacking on their tasty food.
  • The Silo Hotel is the Grand Dame of the area, but she’s much friendlier than you’d expect. You can just arrive to the 6th floor bar, The Willaston, and enjoy snacks and drinks, but why not make it an event and pre-reserve a table at The Silo Rooftop or the Granary Café?

At NananTravel, we’ve always been passionate about everything to do with Cape Town.  We love seeing our city constantly up its game. The Zeitz MOCAA has definitely done that O our collective chests puff out with even more pride. When are you planning your visit?

There’s a soft knock on the door of your cabin. You’re gently pulled out of your smiling dreamland into the morning sunlight. You roll over on your plush mattress, the thick cotton sheets wrapping softly around your rested body, and lift your cheek off the fluffy pillows.

“Come in,” you whisper loudly.

A smiling attendant slides your door open, carrying a tray with a steaming coffee plunger, two coffee cups and an assortment of baked goodies. The sharp, sweet smell of the freshly roasted coffee delights your senses as you welcome the new day. Outside the landscape is flashing by in bright greens and blues and yellows. You get excited about the new places you’re going to discover today as you pour yourself and your lover/spouse/partner/friend a welcome cup of morning brew.

Where are you?

The answer is simple. You’re on a railway track either somewhere in South America or Southern Africa. And you’re being swept from one tourist highlight to the next in old world glamour and new world luxury and convenience. You’re hurtling through vistas that are brand new to you and every cell in your body is jumping up and down at the sheer indulgence of the experience.

It doesn’t matter which continent you’re on; whether the next stop is Victoria Falls or Lake Titicaca, Cape Town or Cusco, if it’s luxury trains that get you grooving, there are a number of great ways to do it.

The Belmond Andean Explorer in Peru

The Belmond Andean Explorer in Peru is South America’s first luxury train that combines genuine getaways with sleeping accommodations at night. It travels along one of the highest train routes in the world. The service launched in May 2017 and the reviews we’re receiving are exceptional!

They have one to three-day journeys and tickets start at a cost of between $450 and $1,225 per person depending on which route you want to do. The routes include places like Lake Titicana, Arequipa City, Cusco and Puno. On each train, you have a choice of four types of cabins—Deluxe Double; Junior Double; Twin; and Bunk Bed Cabins.

In addition to your plush accommodation, you can relax and unwind in the lounge, dining and observation cars. Where else do you want to be enjoying your Pisco Sour than sitting on the rear observation deck with the wind in your hair and hundreds of kilometres of Andean landscape rushing by around you?

A little more about the areas you’ll be visiting: Cusco is the place everyone visits in order to go to Machu Picchu. It is one of the most beautiful cities in Peru and the world!

Arequipa, the second largest city in Peru, is also very beautiful. It is located near a couple of volcanoes, with Misti being the most reknowned because of its perfect shape. The city has lots to offer and the cuisine of the area is very traditional and absolutely delicious!

Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world and right between Peru and Bolivia, can be visited from the city of Puno. Here you can also see ancient pre-Incan ruins as well as the islands (Urus and Taquile being the most popular). If you want to stay longer and explore further lands, from Puno you can cross to Bolivia and visit La Paz and go on to Salar de Uyuni, the salt plains. While you’re there, why not pop over into the northern parts of Chile and visit the Atacama Desert and even the valley of volcanos? All very beautiful!

Rovos Rail and the Blue Train in Southern Africa

When seeing Southern Africa by rail, you are spoilt for choice.

Rovos Rail was launched in 1989 and has a world-renowned reputation for five-star service, excellent food and only the best wines the region has to offer. Luxury doesn’t come in a better package. Rovos has three types of cabins: Pullman, Deluxe and Royal Suites and categorise their many itineraries into “Short Journeys” and “Long Journeys”. You (and your budget) get to decide whether to commit to the Cape Town to Dar es Salaam trip (15 days starting at $12,450 per person sharing) or shorter but equally popular routes like Cape Town to Pretoria (3 days starting from approximately $1,455 per person sharing). Why not hire the entire train for you and your party? We can liaise with Rovos to do this for you. Now there’s a once-in-a-lifetime travel memory waiting to be made.

The Blue Train is another one of South Africa’s internationally popular luxury train experiences. It started all the way back in the 1920s as a luxury steam train and brings all that charm with it into the 21st century.

The Blue Train’s primary itinerary is the 3-day trip from Cape Town to Pretoria, or vice- versa. It also does a route from Pretoria to Hoedspruit, which is right at the Kruger National Park and is ideal if you want to continue your travel adventure with a safari in this world-famous national park.

There are two types of suites on the train—The Luxury and the De Luxe—and their prices are a touch more economical than Rovos Rail. Also, like Rovos, The Blue Train is available for corporate and private rental.

A little bit more about the areas you’ll be visiting: Cape Town’s reputation precedes it and we’ll need more than a few blog entries to share all of the amazing things to do there. Definitely plan to spend some time in the winelands outside the city and also to climb Lions Head (much more manageable than it looks).

Pretoria is the state capital of South Africa and you can visit the Union Buildings, which house the office of the President.

Victoria Falls are considered the largest waterfalls in the world. When there, consider the Boma restaurant. Its an amazing food and tribal experience that includes being given a “chitenges” (traditional robe) and ceremonial hand-washing. You can even have a reading of bones and tribal artefacts by the resident “sangoma” (traditional healer) if you’d like to know what your future holds.

Want something more economical yet equally as fun?

High-end luxury may not be your thing, but train travel is? In Peru, the Vistadome train takes you from Cusco to Machu Picchu in about three hours and is a fantastic experience of traditional food, music and dance.

In South Africa, you can take an overnight train ride from Johannesburg to Cape Town or Durban or Port Elizabeth aboard the Shosholoza Meyl train.

Both these experiences are great ways not only to get to an exciting destination, but also to see the countryside from up-close without all of the hassle of driving through it yourself.

First Thursday in Cape Town

First Thursday in Cape Town

First Thursday in Cape Town

Blog post with NANANtravel

If you’re lucky enough that your time in Cape Town falls on the first Thursday of the month, then there is only one place to be from 5pm that evening onwards – and that is anywhere on the map of First Thursday locations.

First Thursdays is a global phenomenon. It started in London and now happens in many cities around the world, including Cape Town and more recently Johannesburg. Cape Town has a particularly vibrant art scene. From upcoming township artists to the more traditional works of established creatives, there is a colour for every art enthusiast.

The main objective of First Thursdays is to make all this art more accessible and so you’ll find most galleries open until 9pm (some may close at 8), and the streets full of people taking it all in.

What starts with viewing of art and enjoying some street music usually carries over into a dinner at one of the great restaurants nearby and even a late-night party at one of the great dance spots around the corner.

Restaurants can get really full on First Thursdays. Some don’t take bookings but run waiting lists that can cause hours-long delays in getting to a table. Ask Germán for advice here and let us book somewhere suitable, because you definitely want to experience everything that this social-calendarhighlight has to offer.

What we like to do is start our evening off at Open Wine, a small, cute wine shop at 72 Wale Street. From there we work our way downtown, criss-crossing up and down the narrow side streets. Our favourite galleries are EbonySmith StudioThe Cape Gallery99 on Loop and Chandler House. We also love ending up at La Parada after going to the galleries, for some tasty tapas, great drinks and an amazing vibe. HQ is another favourite eatery too – they often have a DJ playing and the best sirloin in Cape Town.

Gastro Tours in Lima

Gastro Tours in Lima

Gastro Tours in Lima

Blog post with NANANtravel
Go HomeBlog Articles

If you’re only going to Peru to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu then there is a lot about this amazing country that you’ll miss. Yes, the trek to over 4,200 metres above sea level will be a trip you’ll never forget but there is another part of the Peruvian heritage that is also an incredible experience for all your senses. That is the food scene, especially in Lima but throughout the country too. We believe here is no better way to immerse yourself in this than by way of a Gastro Tour. This can last one or two hours – or up to four and five days!

TripAdvisor has a list of great food and wine tours in Lima. You can scan the routes they follow, places they go to and reviews they’ve received. This is a good way to get an idea of what is available. One of the options you won’t find on this list (or advertised anywhere else) is a unique gastro experience we stumbled upon a few years ago, run by an incredible woman who lives in a house on the cliffs overlooking the coast of Lima.

She doesn’t want her tour advertised and so we can’t even give you details here. What we can tell you is that she’s based in Barranco and needs to be booked in advance because she only takes groups of 5 to 8 people, maximum.

But it is absolutely worth it: this lovely lady takes you to the market to buy all ingredients fresh and direct from their source. You’ll then go back to her home and be taught how to cook them. Over the course of a few hours you’ll transform fresh local produce into the tasty dishes you’ll then share with her and your friends, while overlooking the crashing waves of the ocean below.

This is a truly unique experience and we can’t recommend it highly enough.

We’re really proud of other experiences we’ve made happen for our clients. Some of them are daredevils; some love the extravagant side of life; some are just regular folks like the rest of us. Here are our favourite memories relating to food:

  • We had a client from Rio decide she felt like flying to Lima for the day to bring a few of her friends to dine at Maido. We made that happen! They flew in on a Saturday morning, ate at Maido, which is a Japanese Peruvian fusion restaurant and one of the top eating places in Lima, and flew home the next morning. Talk about spur-of-the-moment memories!
  • A couple once contacted us for ideas of what to do during an 8-hour layover in Lima on their way to a wedding in Colombia. Without hesitation, we suggested they have lunch at La Central, the number 1 restaurant in Peru and rated number 4 in the world. We also suggested dinner at Maido. They agreed to both and we made the bookings. Arriving at La Central before it opened, our guests decided to snack on a Chicharron sandwich at a deli next door, not realising that a 16-course food adventure awaited. They ended up spending their entire lay-over eating and told us afterwards they loved absolutely everything that was presented and were so well fed they nearly missed their onward flight. Of course, we would never let that happen 😉

If you do find yourself in Peru and looking for good restaurant choices, in addition to Maido and La Central, we happily recommend El Mercado, La Mar, Pica, La Nacional, Rafael, Panchita, Cala, Saqra, La Huaca and Amaz. And if you find yourself unable to decide on what dishes to try, Germán’s favourites are Ceviche de Pescado, Tacu Tacu, Causa Rellena, Aji de Gallina and Choclo con Huancaina. Let us know where you went and what you thought of the food and the place. We’d love to hear from you!
