When it comes to luxury travel, Botswana in October offers an unparalleled adventure waiting to be explored. This month presents a delightful combination of dry and sunny weather with fewer crowds, making it the ideal time to immerse yourself in the marvels of a safari or indulge in the serenity of a desert retreat.

The October Advantage

October is a standout month for a Botswana visit. It marks the beginning of the dry season, characterised by warm and sun-soaked days with minimal rainfall. This climate provides an excellent opportunity to explore the country’s diverse outdoor attractions, such as the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park, and the Makgadikgadi Pans.

What’s more, it’s a prime time for wildlife viewing, as many animals congregate around the permanent water sources during the dry season. And the icing on the cake? October sees fewer tourists compared to the peak season from June to August.

In essence, October is an ideal window to experience Botswana’s best features: favorable weather, fewer crowds, and thriving wildlife. If you’re contemplating a luxury safari trip to this African gem, look no further than October. Your expectations will undoubtedly be exceeded.

Here are some of the most sought-after luxury safari lodges in Botswana:

Makgadikgadi Pans: Jack’s Camp and San Camp are two of the most exclusive and luxurious safari camps in the Makgadikgadi Pans, a vast salt pan system in Botswana. These camps offer guests the opportunity to experience the unique beauty and wildlife of this region in style. Activities include game drives, bush walks, cultural experiences with the local Bushmen people, and stargazing. The Makgadikgadi Pans are renowned as one of the best places in the world for stargazing, thanks to clear skies and minimal light pollution.

Okavango Delta: North Island Okavango, Tuludi, Duke’s Camp, Sable Alley – The Okavango Delta stands out as one of the world’s most unique and beautiful wilderness areas. It is home to an incredible diversity of wildlife and can be explored in various ways, with one of the best being to stay at one of the many luxury safari camps within the delta.

Chobe National Park: Chobe Game Lodge, Chilwero Lodge, Savute Elephant Lodge – Three of the most sought-after safari lodges in Chobe National Park are Chobe Game Lodge, Chilwero Lodge, and Savute Elephant Lodge. These lodges offer guests a variety of activities, including game drives, boat safaris, bush walks, and cultural experiences with the local San people. They are also known for their stunning accommodations, world-class cuisine, and excellent service.

Chobe national park is only 1 hour drive from Victoria falls so it makes it the perfect combination of Safari and Victoria falls, but be very careful when you go to Vic falls, October and November are not good months to go there, being dry season there is very little water on the falls.

Incredible! Beyond expectations. German guided us on an absolutely amazing trip to Cape Town, Franschhoek, Hermanus and a safari at Thornybush game reserve. Every recommendation was spot on from a restaurants to a guided tour of Cape Point, the Hop on hop off bus, where to visit in the wine country, lodging in a beach front suite in Hermanus. As for the safari at Thornybush - WOW! More than we could have ever imagined in terms of luxury and game sightings. Thank you German. Looking forward to our next trip with you as our guide. And yes, we have told all family and friends, this is the man to contact for their travels.

We feel beyond lucky to have found Nanan Travel! We are from the USA and are DIY-ers, used to making our own travel arrangements. When planning for our bucket-list trip to S. Africa, it quickly got overwhelming and stressful to differentiate among the innumerable safari options on the internet, figure out domestic flights, assess safety concerns, find a private driver to tour Cape Point, etc. We did not want to travel with a tour group, nor use a global internet travel agency, so I looked for a travel agent actually based in Cape Town so that we could deal with just one person who really knew the area. I found Nanan based on location and reviews, then was sold by their individualized approach and willingness to help with as much or as little of the planning as one wants. We reached out to German de la Melena and he answered immediately, even though it was a Sunday evening in Cape Town, wanting to hear all about our wishes so that he could work on things promptly and have a suggested itinerary by the time we woke up the next morning! He was thoughtful, conscientious, friendly, worked within our budget and did not try to upsell us, gave us options and even incorporated some specific requests we had. From that initial contact on, all the stress and worry about our upcoming trip went away! After designing a fantastic itinerary for us, the true test of an amazing travel agent came when my husband injured himself the week before our trip and couldn’t travel, requiring us to postpone for 4 weeks. While we were dealing with stressful health issues, we gave German our medical documentation and he took care of the rest. He had to change all of our reservations and domestic flights, and went above and beyond to do so without our incurring more expense. What a huge relief! German remained remarkably responsive before and during our trip, able to advise on any question and troubleshoot any problem, reachable by What’s App in minutes. Between the great itinerary and the peace of mind, working with German and knowing he had our back truly made all the difference in our experience being the trip of a lifetime!! Thank you, German! You deserve more than 5 stars and I will refer everyone I know to you!

What to pack for a luxury trip to Peru

What to pack for a luxury trip to Peru

What to pack for a luxury trip to Peru

Peru, a land blessed with awe-inspiring diversity in climates and landscapes, beckons you to an unparalleled luxury adventure. Its mystical allure ranges from the sun-kissed coasts to the snow-capped Andes, from dense Amazonian rainforests to vibrant urban havens. Yet, to truly savour this multifaceted gem, meticulous packing is paramount. In this comprehensive guide, we unveil the secrets to a seamlessly luxurious journey through Peru’s enchanting realms.

  • Clothes: Pack for all types of weather, from warm and sunny in the coastal regions to cool and rainy in the Andes. Be sure to bring a jacket, hat, and gloves if you’re planning on visiting Machu Picchu or other high-altitude destinations.
  • Shoes: You’ll be doing a lot of walking on your trip, so pack comfortable shoes. A pair of sneakers or hiking boots is a good option, depending on the activities you’ll be doing.
  • Dressy clothes: If you’re planning on dining at any upscale restaurants or attending any special events, be sure to pack a few dressy outfits.
  • Accessories: Don’t forget to pack a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and insect repellent. You may also want to bring a camera, binoculars, and a first-aid kit.
  • Other essentials: Bring your passport, visa, credit cards, and cash. You may also want to pack an adapter if you’re traveling from outside of Peru.

Here are some specific items you may want to pack for different activities in Peru

Visiting Machu Picchu: In addition to warm clothes and comfortable shoes, you may also want to pack a walking stick or trekking poles to help with the steep climbs.

Hiking in the Andes: Pack hiking boots, a backpack, warm clothes, and a raincoat.

Visiting the Amazon rainforest: Pack lightweight, breathable clothing, as well as a raincoat and insect repellent. You may also want to pack a pair of binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens.

Visiting a city like Lima or Cusco: Pack for warm weather and city nights. This includes comfortable shoes, a dressy outfit, and a hat and sunglasses.

Elevate Your Luxury Experience: The Art of Packing

To fully relish Peru’s splendors, it’s not just about what you pack, but how you pack. Here are a few additional tips to elevate your packing game:

  • Layering is Key: In regions like Cusco and Machu Picchu, temperatures can vary greatly throughout the day. Layering is essential to adapt to these changes. Pack lightweight, moisture-wicking base layers that can be easily added or removed as needed.
  • Wrinkle-Resistant Fabrics: While rolling your clothes can save space and reduce wrinkles, choosing wrinkle-resistant fabrics is a smart move for luxury travelers. This ensures that your outfits stay polished and ready for any upscale occasion.
  • Multi-Purpose Clothing: Opt for versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down. A classic scarf or shawl can transform a casual outfit into an elegant ensemble, while convertible clothing can adapt to different settings.
  • Compression Bags: These nifty bags are a game-changer for maximizing luggage space. Use them for bulkier items like sweaters or jackets.
  • Travel Steamer: Luxury travelers understand the importance of looking impeccable. A portable travel steamer can be a lifesaver for smoothing out any unexpected wrinkles.
  • Quality Luggage: Invest in sturdy, high-quality luggage that can withstand the rigors of travel. Luxury luggage often comes with additional features like built-in chargers and compartments for organization.
  • Medical Kit: While luxury travel is about indulgence, it’s also about being prepared. Pack a small medical kit with essentials like pain relievers, allergy medication, and basic first-aid supplies.
  • Local Currency: While credit cards are widely accepted in urban areas, having some local currency on hand is useful for small purchases, tips, and in more remote regions where card payments may not be as common.

Managing Your Money for Luxurious Travel in Africa and South America: Tips for Luxury Travelers

Blog post with #NANANtravel

Africa and South America offer captivating destinations for luxury travelers, boasting exceptional hotels, restaurants, and experiences. For those seeking a luxurious travel experience in these regions, a great luxury travel agent is essential. This comprehensive guide provides valuable tips to help luxury travelers enjoy the best that Africa and South America have to offer.

1. Contact a luxury travel agency: Before your trip, allow your travel agent to recommend the best luxury hotels in the countries you plan to visit. This way you can create a budget according to the chosen hotels and avoid excessive spending. Ask about restaurant costs and other relevant expenses. Make reservations in advance at restaurants

2. Bring cash or not?: In Africa, there are many destinations and you tend to visit several countries in a single trip, you have to find out how easy it is to pay with credit cards to see if it is necessary to bring cash the same happens in South America. It is advisable to have some cash on hand, the best and easiest thing is to change to local money at the airport when you arrive.

3. Utilize credit cards: Credit cards provide a convenient method for managing expenses while traveling. Use your credit card to make purchases, and pay any extras like for example tipping. To avoid interest charges, ensure that you pay your credit card bill in full each month. For example, in South Africa, you can pay with a credit card everywhere, but you need very little to no cash at all, also, Amex is not accepted in many venues outside the USA so it’s a good idea to have an extra credit card.

4. Minimize ATM usage: ATM fees can be steep, so it’s wise to use ATMs sparingly. When necessary, choose ATMs located in banks or reputable businesses and safe areas to reduce the risk of fraudulent activity. Always pay with a credit card where possible to save the cash for occasions when it’s needed.

5. Embrace the art of bargaining: In many parts of Africa and South America, bargaining is customary, particularly when purchasing souvenirs or local goods. Don’t hesitate to negotiate for the best prices or ask your guide to help you and enjoy the satisfaction of a successful bargain.

6. Indulge in local cuisine: Sampling local food is an excellent way to invest money while savoring the flavours of Africa and South America. Local cuisine often offers more authentic options compared to imported dishes, allowing you to experience the authentic local culture.

7. Opt for luxury accommodations: Africa and South America offer a plethora of luxurious accommodations with exceptional service, amenities, and prime locations. Treat yourself to a memorable stay by choosing luxury establishments carefully curated by your travel agent.

8. Avoid tourist traps: Tourist traps are often expensive and lack authenticity. For a truly luxurious travel experience, ask your travel agent to organize activities beyond touristy areas and explore the local neighborhoods. This allows for more genuine interactions and hidden gems. For more details on this read our article: Avoiding Tourist Traps in Africa and Peru for Luxury Travelers: A Comprehensive Guide

Additional Tips for Luxury Travelers:

  • Withdraw cash only when needed and avoid exposing yourself to lots of cash on the street.
  • Ask your travel agent if you can pay tips in advance, that way there’s one more thing you don’t need to worry about.
  • Make sure that you have a guide or a driver with you for most of your activities, they will always recommend safe places and look after your safety
  • Familiarize yourself with common scams targeting tourists in Africa and South America, enabling you to avoid falling victim to them.
  • Very Important! Make sure your visas are in order and any other documents you might need while traveling to avoid extra and unnecessary expenses

Malaria, a potentially life-threatening disease caused by a parasite transmitted through mosquito bites, poses a significant health risk in tropical and subtropical regions. Protecting yourself from malaria is crucial to ensure your well-being during travel. This comprehensive guide offers practical tips for malaria prevention, including medication, insect repellent, and proper awareness.

1. Take malaria prevention medication: Malaria prevention medication is the cornerstone of protection. Consult your doctor to determine the most suitable medication for your needs, as there are various options available.

2. Utilize effective insect repellent: Use insect repellents containing DEET or other proven active ingredients. Apply the repellent to exposed skin and clothing as directed, reapplying as necessary.

3. Sleep under a treated mosquito net: When staying in areas where malaria is prevalent, sleep under a mosquito net treated with permethrin. This provides an additional barrier against mosquito bites.

4. Avoid mosquito bites: Minimize exposure to mosquitoes by wearing long sleeves, pants, and closed-toe shoes when outdoors. Steer clear of outdoor activities during peak mosquito activity at dawn and dusk.

5. Stay in well-screened areas: Choose accommodation with well-maintained window and door screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering your living space.

6. Recognize the signs and symptoms: Familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms of malaria, such as fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue. Seek immediate medical attention if you suspect you may have contracted malaria.

Additional Tips for Effective Malaria Protection:

  • Inform your doctor about your travel plans to malaria-endemic areas for personalized advice on preventive measures and medication.
  • Pack a comprehensive travel kit that includes a first-aid kit, insect repellent, and other essential items for emergencies.
  • Comply with local laws and regulations in countries that require mandatory malaria prevention medication.
  • Stay informed by accessing resources such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, which offers valuable information on malaria prevention and treatment.

Embark on an unparalleled adventure to Kenya in September, where experiences await. This month offers a delightful combination of dry and sunny weather with fewer crowds, making it the ideal time to immerse yourself in the marvels of a safari or indulge in the serenity of a beach vacation. Although you can travel to Kenya any time of the year, we chose September because it is usually the time of the year when the Migration reaches the further north point, Maasai Mara National Park and then they start their way back to South Serengeti so September – October is the best time to visit Maasai mara and Kenya.

Captivating Safaris

Delve into the heart of Africa’s finest safari destinations, with Kenya boasting a plethora of renowned parks, including the prestigious Masai Mara National Reserve, Tsavo National Park, Amboseli National Park, and Lake Nakuru National Park. Witness a mesmerizing array of wildlife, including majestic lions, majestic elephants, graceful giraffes, elegant zebras, and elusive leopards.

For an extraordinary safari experience, Kenya offers a selection of exceptional lodges and camps. Immerse yourself in the splendor of the surrounding landscapes while relishing breathtaking views from these lodges. Indulge in exclusive amenities like private plunge pools and personalized butler service, ensuring your every desire is catered to.

Activities Beyond Imagination

In addition to captivating safaris and serene beach vacations, Kenya has a plethora of other activities that will enchant luxury travelers like you, such as:

Beaches in Kenya

Venture to Kenya’s pristine beaches, where luxury and tranquility blend harmoniously. Diani Beach, Lamu, and Chale Island are among the most sought-after destinations for relaxation and leisure. Bask in the embrace of clear blue waters, stroll along soft white sands, and bask in the glorious African sunshine.

Hot Air Ballooning

Hot air ballooning is a truly unique and unforgettable way to experience the Masai Mara National Reserve. As you soar above the savannah, you’ll have a bird’s-eye view of the vast herds of animals that roam the reserve, including lions, elephants, zebras, and giraffes. You may even spot the occasional cheetah or leopard.

Hot air ballooning is typically offered at sunrise when the light is most magical. As you float silently above the landscape, you’ll feel a sense of peace and tranquility that is hard to find anywhere else. So don’t complain about waking up REALLY early because it’s worth it.

Game Drives

Game drives are another popular activity for luxury travelers in Kenya. These 4×4 safaris take you into the heart of the African bush, where you can see all sorts of amazing wildlife up close. You’ll likely spot lions, elephants, zebras, giraffes, and many other animals. During September and October, the Wildebeest migration is in the north of Serengeti and in the Maasai mara, so if you are really lucky you might witness a river crossing and that is Nature’s most amazing show to watch,

Game drives are typically conducted in the morning and afternoon when the animals are most active. Your guide will point out the different animals and tell you about their behavior. You may also be able to see some of the animal’s natural habitats, such as watering holes and grazing areas.

Bush Walks

If you’re looking for a more intimate experience with nature, you can go on a bush walk. These guided walks take you through the bush, where you’ll have the chance to see animals up close and learn about their natural environment.

Bush walks are a great way to get away from the crowds and experience the African bush in a more personal way. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn about the plants and trees that grow in the bush, as well as the different types of animals that live there.

Luxurious Spa Treatments

After a long day of exploring, there’s nothing quite like a luxurious spa treatment to help you relax and rejuvenate. Kenya has some of the best spas in Africa, where you can enjoy a variety of treatments, such as massages, facials, and body wraps.

Many of Kenya’s spas use natural ingredients, such as essential oils and herbs, to create their treatments. This helps to ensure that you’ll experience a truly authentic and relaxing experience.

Private Dining

If you’re looking for a truly special dining experience, you can book a private dinner under the stars. These dinners are typically held in the bush, where you’ll be surrounded by the sounds of the African night.

You’ll enjoy a delicious meal that has been prepared with fresh, local ingredients. You may even be able to spot some animals while you’re dining.

Private dinners are a great way to celebrate a special occasion or simply enjoy a romantic evening in the bush.

These are just a few of the many luxury activities that await travelers in Kenya. Whether you’re interested in wildlife safaris, spa treatments, or private dining, you’re sure to find something to enjoy in this beautiful country.

How to Deal with Language Barriers When Traveling in Africa

How to Deal with Language Barriers When Traveling in Africa

How to Deal with Language Barriers When Traveling in Africa

Blog post with #NANANtravel
Blog Posts

Africa is a continent renowned for its rich tapestry of cultures and languages, which can pose a significant challenge for travelers due to the multitude of language barriers. However, there are several effective strategies that can help you overcome these obstacles and ensure a successful trip. Below, you’ll find valuable tips to navigate language barriers while traveling in Africa.

  1. Familiarize yourself with basic phrases in the local language: Demonstrating respect for the local culture and facilitating communication with the community can go a long way. Even learning a few simple phrases can greatly assist you. Here are some examples of common greetings in various African languages:
     – Zulu: Sawubona (Hello)
    – Arabic: Marhaba (Hello)
    – Malagasy: Salam (Hello)
     – Swahili: Karibu (Welcome)

  2. Utilize translation apps: Numerous translation apps, such as Google Translate, iTranslate, and Papago, can prove invaluable during your travels in Africa. These apps offer translation for text, speech, and even images.
  3. Use gestures and body language: Even without knowledge of the local language, you can effectively communicate with locals by employing gestures and body language. This method is particularly helpful when ordering food, seeking directions, or bargaining for souvenirs. For instance, when requesting directions, you can point in the intended direction and mimic a walking motion with your hands.
  4. Exercise patience and understanding: It is crucial to maintain patience and understanding when faced with language barriers. Keep in mind that locals may not be fluent in your language either. If faced with communication difficulties, politely request repetition and consider using simpler language or gestures to convey your message.
  5. Embrace the possibility of making mistakes: Everyone makes mistakes when learning a new language. Do not hesitate to engage with locals, as they often appreciate your efforts to communicate in their language. Laugh off any errors and continue trying.
  6. Seek the assistance of a translator: If you encounter significant communication challenges, consider employing the services of a translator. Translators are often available at tourist attractions, hotels, and restaurants. Alternatively, you can hire a private Guide who will act as a translator to accompany you during your trip.
  7. Embrace creativity: When communication becomes challenging, be prepared to think creatively. This might involve using charades, sketching pictures, or employing Google Translate to translate images. For instance, if you need to ask for the location of a bathroom, you can draw a picture of a toilet or utilize Google Translate to translate the word “bathroom” into the local language.
  8. Maintain an open-minded attitude: Do not expect locals to speak your language fluently. Stay open to the possibility of adjusting your communication style. For example, when conversing with someone who has limited English proficiency, speaking slowly and clearly may be necessary.
  9. Enjoy your journey! Traveling in Africa is an incredible experience, regardless of your language proficiency. Relax, exercise patience, and savor the adventure.

Additionally, here are some further suggestions for dealing with language barriers when traveling in Africa:

  • Conduct thorough research before your trip to familiarize yourself with the local language and culture. This will enhance your understanding of contextual interactions and facilitate communication with locals.
  • Always approach communication with respect for the local language and culture, refraining from making offensive or insensitive remarks.
  • Remain flexible, as travel plans may not always unfold as expected, particularly when language barriers are involved. Be prepared to adapt and go with the flow.

By adequately preparing and applying some effort, you can surmount language barriers and enjoy a successful trip to Africa. Language should not hinder you from exploring the continent, which offers countless wonders to discover. From the boutique hotels to the incredible safari stays, everything was top-notch and exceeded my expectations. The entire trip was seamlessly planned, and I never once had to worry about a thing. The accommodations were luxurious, the guides were knowledgeable and friendly, and the overall experience was truly unforgettable. Last part was the stay in Cape Town before heading back home. The city is absolutely stunning, and I was able to explore all it had to offer thanks to the amazing recommendations from German. I highly recommend Nanan Travel for anyone looking to plan a trip to South Africa or any other destination. Their attention to detail, personalized service, and overall expertise make them the best in the business. Thank you German for an incredible journey that I will never forget!
